Trump's Progress - Limited Edition

A Reimagining of William Hogarth's 'A Rake's Progress' by Cold War Steve
It is often said that Christopher Spencer is a kind of modern day Hogarth, or in the words of Cambridge academic and 18th Century expert Dr Rebecca Anne Barr, ‘Shit Britain’s Photoshop Hogarth’ (read more from Dr Barr about Cold War Steve and Hogarth below). So it is only fitting that in this new series of eight Cold War Steve pieces he has turned his attention to the USA, taking direct inspiration from William Hogarth’s original paintings, ‘A Rake’s Progress’, and taking aim at the second court of Trump.

Trump's Progress
If Cold War Steve’s use of photoshop takes advantage of contemporary politics’ self-satire, his use of Hogarth turns it into a tragi-comedy. Cold War Steve turns Hogarth’s Bedlam into a prison cell populated by Trump’s inner circle. Trump as a geriatric president, finally out of his mind, is a pathetic figure, clutching at straws in the dung and surrounded by the insane faithful – Steve Bannon, Eric Trump, his daughter Ivanka, and his psychotic running mate J.D. Vance. But Cold War Steve loves to have the last laugh. Waving through the iron bars of the madhouse window, is Melania: free at last, and smiling in the sunshine. Cold War Steve’s last laugh lights up the madhouse and suggests that there might be a way out.
